I am a GP registrar from London. In 2014-2015 I took a year out of training to work in Palliative Care in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The School of General Practice in London positively encourages time out, recognising the unique opportunities and challenges it provides. These include exposure to a wide variety of new diseases, working in a different healthcare system, dealing with scarce resources and having to think creatively in order to solve problems. Rationing is a crucial skill in the current climate of the NHS, where as a GP I will have to think carefully about resources.
